Abstract
Nepal is an agricultural country where more than 60% of people depend upon agriculture(Karki and Ghimire, 2003). Total contribution of agricultural sector in GDP of Nepal is 32.35% (MOAC, 2008/09). Among them contribution of livestock sector in total GDP is 30% (FAO, 2005) and pig is second contributor in meat production according to record of MOAC, 2008/09. Pig can convert feed efficiently in short period of time and give income in short time of period. But Nepalese breed, due to lack of improvement and effective research, is unable to perform better compared to exotic breed. Indigenous breeds of Nepal are Chwache, Bampudke and Hurrah. If we are able to improve indigenous breed, we can improve our living standard by commercializing the pig production. So for the improvement of the indigenous breed of pig, we need to identify some economically important traits of indigenous breed which can be improved. Some important traits of indigenous breeds of pig are Total litter weight at weaning, Weight at 154 days of age, Economy of gains from weaning to market weight Carcass desirability etc. This paper is the literature review related to the traits of pig that are economically important.
