I am pleased to share that my research paper, “Scaling Sustainable Aviation Fuel: Cost-Effective Pathways and Regional Economic Impacts,” has been accepted for presentation at the World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists 2026 (WCERE 2026). The conference will take place from June 29 to July 3, 2026, in Carcavelos-Cascais, Portugal, bringing together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners working on environmental and resource economics. The World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists is one of the most important international conferences in the field, providing a global platform for discussing critical issues such as climate change, energy transitions, natural resource management, and sustainable development. This year’s conference received more than 2,500 submissions, all of which went through a rigorous peer-review process. Being selected for presentation is both an honor and an opportunity to contribute to discussions shaping environmental and economic policy.
About the Research
This study examines how different sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production pathways influence both economic viability and regional economic outcomes. Focusing on the southern United States, the research compares three conversion technologies—Hydro-processed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA), Fischer–Tropsch (FT), and Alcohol-to-Jet (AtJ)—while holding total SAF production constant at 100 million gallons. The analysis shows that technology choice significantly affects production costs, co-product revenues, employment, and regional economic spillovers. While AtJ achieves the lowest minimum selling prices, FT generates stronger regional economic impacts through larger co-product streams. The results also suggest that mixed-technology deployment strategies can balance cost competitiveness with regional economic benefits by improving feedstock resilience and diversifying economic activity.

My paper will be presented in an egg-timer session, a format that encourages concise presentations and interactive discussions among participants. These sessions allow researchers to quickly share key insights and receive valuable feedback from experts in the field. Participating in WCERE 2026 will provide an excellent opportunity to engage with leading scholars and policymakers working on environmental and energy economics. I look forward to sharing this research, learning from other presentations, and contributing to global conversations on sustainable energy transitions and climate policy.
