Abstract: The rapid expansion of solar energy on US farmland faces land-use conflicts and community opposition. Agrivoltaics is proposed as a middle-ground solution, but which factors will influence a solar developer’s decision to adopt agrivoltaics remain under-explored. We examined factors that will influence a developer’s decision to adopt agrivoltaics as well as the current status and future interests in agrivoltaics development in the US. Our findings show that reducing community opposition to large scale solar energy projects is the strongest driver of agrivoltaics adoption, carrying more than a 25% weight in their decisions. At the same time, developers face challenges such as coordination difficulties, a lack of regulatory assurances, and perceived risks associated with novel dual-use technology. Despite such challenges, we found that solar developers are building several agrivoltaics projects across the country and are interested in developing more in the future. Addressing barriers related to limited policy incentives, regulatory uncertainty, coordination challenges, and perceived risks will be critical to accelerating agrivoltaics development in the US.

Abstract: Expansion of utility scale solar farming on cropland in the Midwestern United States is leading to community opposition to what is perceived as a significant diversion of land from the production of food/feed (row) crops. To address this conflict, there is growing interest in agrivoltaics that co-locates solar energy generation and row crop production on the same land. Row crop agrivoltaics is yet to occur at scale. We discuss the potential drivers, economic incentives and barriers for scaling row crop agrivoltaics and its implications for conserving land and for the costs of food and energy production. We conclude with a discussion of the institutional and market changes needed for row crop agrivoltaics to transition from concept to solution by increasing the social acceptability of producing solar energy on cropland.

Abstract: This study examines how contracts and bioenergy crop yield insurance incentivize biomass supply for three billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel. Results show that meeting feedstock demand by growing uninsured miscanthus requires a fixed biomass price at $78–$86/metric ton, a revenue share of 32%–36%, or a land-leasing payment about $178/acre. Growing uninsured switchgrass requires similar terms. Bioenergy crop insurance partially substitutes for compensation for bearing production risk, decreasing required fixed prices and revenue shares by 4% (6%) for miscanthus (switchgrass), while having minimal impact on bioenergy crop acreage and average biomass production cost, but mixed effects on farmers’ welfare gains.

Abstract: Natural disturbances such as drought reduce timber volume growth and increase tree mortality, which can have serious repercussions for the forest-based industries that rely on timber as a raw material. To assess these impacts, we utilized Forest Inventory and Analysis data and estimated weather caused-mortality and loss of total live timber volume for Oklahoma, USA between 2011 and 2015, a period in which this region experienced major drought events. An input-output model was built to understand economic implications for the forest sector given the live timber volume lost during this period. The results showed that the timberland drought could result in more than $20 million in the total losses for the Oklahoma forest sector. We also administered a survey instrument to understand landowner perceptions concerning drought and erratic rainfall patterns in Oklahoma. Our survey results revealed that landowners focused on livestock production, hunting, and active management perceived greater drought impacts. Our findings recommend outreach regarding forest thinning as a potential tool to reduce drought-related losses.

Abstract: Forest-grassland ecotones are a mosaic of grassland, savanna, and upland forest. As such, landowners may have opportunities to choose to manage their lands for multiple objectives. We estimated the economic returns from managing forest and rangeland in southeastern Oklahoma, USA to produce different combinations of timber, cattle forage, and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmermann) browse for a 40-year period. We further conducted a survey to understand landowner perceptions of obstacles to adopting active management that involve timber harvest and prescribed fire. The highest net return was obtained from the treatment with harvested timber that was burned every four years (uneven-aged woodland/forest) because it had the greatest gross return from a combination of timber (46%), cattle forage (42%), and deer browse (11%). The return from this treatment was greater than that for managed for timber only (closed-canopy forest) or prioritizing cattle and deer (savanna). Survey results suggested that landowners were aware of the benefits of active management but that the majority (66%) considered cost a major obstacle in the management of their forest or rangeland. In particular, women forestland owners and older landowners considered cost an obstacle. Our findings advocate integrated timber, cattle, and deer management as the best economic strategy within the forest-grassland ecotone and for targeted outreach and landowner education related to the benefits of active management.

Abstract: White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) hunting is an important economic activity associated with the management of forests and rangelands in the USA, with over $12.9 billion dollars of related annual expenditures. Reducing tree cover through thinning and prescribed fire both have the potential to increase the quantity and quality of deer forage. We evaluated the long-term impacts of eight different combinations of fire return intervals and tree harvest on forage productivity and protein content of the forage. Based on management regime, study units ranged from savanna to closed-canopy forest. Aboveground net primary production (ANPP) of six functional groups (grass, panicum, forb, legume, woody, sedge) of understory vegetation was measured in October 2019 and 2020 using destructive sampling. Samples for foliar crude protein (CP) concentration were collected in spring, summer, and fall of 2020. Total understory ANPP ranged from 2.9 to 466.3 g m−2 and was up to 566% greater in savanna systems maintained by frequent fire (return interval of three years or less) than in non-burned forest treatments. Annual burning resulted in ANPP dominated by herbaceous plants composed mostly of fire-tolerant grasses (e.g., Andropogon gerardii, Schizachyrium scoparium). Longer fire return intervals or no fire resulted in roughly equal ANPP from understory woody and herbaceous species. Crude protein concentrations were up to 45.7% greater in the woodland and forest units than in the savanna units for seven of the eleven species sampled. The greater CP in the forests was most noticeable in the summer when deer needs for quality forage are substantial. Increased protein concentrations of understory species in the forests, but greater ANPP in the savannas indicate that managing for a mix of savanna and woodland could be ideal for balancing forage quantity with increased forage protein.

Abstract: Active management such as prescribed fire and thinning can restore savanna and prairie ecosystem to maintain a full suite of ecosystem services and create suitable habitat for wildlife species such as white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Active management comes with the cost of management and acceptance of management tools. The south-central transitional ecoregion of the USA, which otherwise was a mixture of forest, savanna, and tallgrass prairie, is increasing in woody plant dominance due to the exclusion of fire and other anthropogenic factors. Deer hunting is a vital source of revenue generation to offset the landowner’s management cost in the region. We studied Oklahoma landowners’ perceptions regarding active and sustainable management of forest and rangeland for deer habitat using two established theories of reasoned action and planned behavior as well as expanded theories adding moral norms. We analyzed mailed survey data using structural equation modeling. We found that subjective norms and perceived behavior control significantly affected deer hunting intention when moral norms were introduced into the model. Attitudes independently significantly affected intentions of deer hunting but have negative relations with the intentions. The study suggested that landowners have positive social pressure and were interested in active management but associated financial burden and risk could be shaping negative attitudes.

Abstract: Eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) is rapidly encroaching on grasslands in the southern Great Plains. This has several adverse effects on the landscape including increased wildfire risk, decreased water runoff, and reduced forage available for cattle production. Several best management practices have been identified to reduce the spread of eastern redcedar, including the use of prescribed fire. However, numerous barriers exist against the use of prescribed fire such as societal acceptance or liability concerns. The purpose of this study was to determine how stakeholders from government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and landowners perceive the use of prescribed fire to control eastern redcedar encroachment. The strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats−analytical hierarchical process method was used for data analysis. The study showed that governmental and landowner stakeholders viewed that the negatives associated with prescribed fire outweigh the potential benefits. Nongovernmental organization stakeholders had differing opinions, and they were largely supportive of using prescribed fire. The results suggest that there is a need for tailored outreach to alleviate the concerns associated with risks and liabilities, as escaped prescribed fires are highly uncommon.

Abstract: The term “urban heat island” (UHI) describes increased surface and atmospheric temperatures in an urban core relative to surrounding non-urbanized areas. Although the phenomenon has been studied to a great extent throughout the world, it is less understood for Kathmandu, Nepal. This study used the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) 8-day product (MOD11A2) to evaluate land surface temperatures (LSTs), the MODIS-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) 16-day product (MOD13Q1) to quantify land surface characteristics, and the MODIS annual land cover classification product (MCD12Q1) to identify major land cover classes. We evaluated the spatial correlation between significant changes in LSTs and NDVI between 2000–2018. Overall, urban (permanently developed areas) LSTs were consistently greater than non-urban (forests and dynamic agriculture lands) LSTs; however, the rate of increase in temperature was higher outside the central Kathmandu developed urban area. Furthermore, significant changes in NDVI values over time were more widespread and not always spatially coincident with significant changes in LST values, particularly for forested land areas. These results provide insight into systematic planning of open and green areas, construction of new infrastructure in peripheral areas, and highlight the challenges in applying traditional UHI conceptual models to rapidly developing urban areas such as Kathmandu, Nepal.

Abstract: A field experiment was conducted with native soil; sewage sludge (SS); horse manure (HM); chicken manure (CM); vermicompost, organic fertilizer and inorganic fertilizer mixed with the native soil. The soil in each of the seven treatments was also mixed with biochar and planted with eggplant. Eggplant fruits were analyzed for vitamin C, total phenols, and soluble sugars. The number and weight of fruits obtained from inorganic treatments were not significantly different from those obtained from organic fertilizer. Concentrations of total phenols were greatest (28 µg g−1 fresh fruits) in fruits of plants grown in vermicompost mixed with biochar compared to SS and HM amendments. Vitamin C was greatest (265 µg g−1 fresh fruits) in fruits of plants grown in soil amended with biochar compared to all other amendments. Plants grown in CM amended soil were 62% and 67% greater in size compared to plants grown in SS-biochar or vermicompost biochar amended soil, respectively.

Abstract: Promoting the sustainable agricultural practices at an individual farm level is essential to ensure agricultural sustainability. This study analyzed whether and how various factors related to farm or farmers’ characteristics influence the adoption intensity of sustainable agriculture practices. We used a negative binomial regression model to fit the data collected from a mail survey of farmers in Kentucky, USA. Our results showed that the adoption intensity of sustainable agriculture practices varied significantly among agricultural districts in Kentucky. Farmers who grew row crops, had irrigation facilities, and were in favor of crop diversification were significantly more likely than their respective counterparts to adopt more sustainable agriculture practices. Similarly, having a college education and participating in the Tobacco Buyout Program also positively and significantly affected the intensity of adopting sustainable agriculture practices among Kentucky farmers. In contrast, a lack of adequate knowledge about sustainable farming and an unfamiliarity with technology significantly and negatively related to less adoption of sustainable agriculture practices.

Mishra, Bijesh, Michael Morley, and Daniel C. Matisoff. 202Y. “Scaling Sustainable Aviation Fuel: Cost-Effective Pathways and Regional Economic Impacts”. Download: Paper | Data | Code | Others. Abstract: Scaling sustainable aviation fuel production is central to aviation decarbonization, yet policymakers and investors face uncertainty over which conversion pathways can deliver economically viable fuel while generating meaningful regional economic benefits. Holding total sustainable aviation fuel fixed at one hundred million gallons, we evaluate the technoeconomic feasibility and regional economic impacts three technology pathways, Hydro-processed Esters and Fatty Acids, Fischer Tropsch, and Alcohol to Jet, in the southern US under both single-technology and mixed-portfolio deployment scenarios. We show that technology pathway choice alone fundamentally reshapes cost structures, co-product revenues, employment intensity, and tax generation. AtJ achieves lowest minimum selling prices, FT generates larger co-product streams and stronger regional economic spillovers. HEFA’s commercial maturity is constrained by high feedstock cost, low co-product production efficiency, and mediocre economic impact at the regional scale. Mixed-pathway portfolios mitigate trade-offs between cost competitiveness and regional economic impacts, providing an alternative solution to single-pathway deployment by building feedstock resiliency, diversifying economic impacts, and broadening employment opportunities. These findings demonstrate that SAF deployment strategy—not only production volume—plays a key role in determining economic outcomes, providing actionable guidance for regional planners and policymakers designing scalable, economically resilient SAF supply systems.

Abstract: Food plots, sanctuaries, forest canopy cover, and deer observed per visit are crucial in maintaining quality deer hunting site and improve hunting success. However, deer hunter’s valuation and relative preference for these site attributes are less understood. The better understanding of hunter’s relative preference and valuation for these attributes helps landowners to make a better land management decision. We used best worst choice to estimate willingness to pay for these hunting site attributes and ranked them based on deer hunter’s relative preference. We found that hunting site with food plots, sanctuaries, and 6-10 deer observed per visit are more valuable for deer hunters compared to forest canopy cover. We further discuss management implication of the findings for hunting site management.

Abstract: The south-central ecotone of the USA, characterized by a mix of forest, savanna, and grasslands, previously maintained by fire, is changing towards closed-canopy forest due to exclusion of fire. The management is complicated by the encroachment of species such as eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) and changing climate such as drought and more sporadic rainfall. Active management using prescribed fire and thinning can restore the ecosystem services, generate revenue, and motivate landowners to manage their land, but the cost is a major barrier. However, economic benefit from actively managed ecosystem under changing climate is not well known in this region. I estimated benefits of various ecosystems maintained using prescribed fire and thinning under changing climate scenarios. I further studied the willingness to pay (WTP), and intentions of landowners to actively manage their land for deer habitat management. I found that sawlog generally increased with the increase in rainfall, but pulpwood growth varied by management regime. The change in net future value (NFV) from timber was relatively stable in non-burned stands compared to frequently burned stands with increasing rainfall. The change in timber volume was greater in harvested and thinned stands. Stands burned in two- and three-year intervals the supported the greatest number of cattle and deer. The willingness to pay for deer hunting was higher in hunting sites with opportunities to observe more deer per visit. The WTP to observe 10 and 6 deers per visit instead of 1 deer per visit are about $11 and $9, respectively. The WTP for deer hunting was higher for deer habitats with food plots and deer sanctuaries. Forest canopy cover had non-significant impact on WTP for deer hunting, providing flexibility for landowners to change canopy and manage land for multiple objectives such as hunting, wildlife management, cattle grazing, and timber production. Landowners had positive intentions, social pressure, but the negative attitude toward actively managing their land. Financial burden, potential reasons for negative attitude, can be offset by revenue generated by managing land for multiple objectives.

Revised Concise Abstract: The purpose of this research was to understand agricultural sustainability of Kentucky farmers through sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs) technology adoption. This research identified commonly adopted sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs), sustainability of farming practices, and SAP technology adoption barriers using various sustainability indicators. We further studied factors affecting adoption intensity of SAPs using farm attributes, farmers’ attitudes and behaviors, socioeconomic and demographic factors, and knowledge, and to evaluate adoption of SAPs among Kentucky Farmers. Farmers generally perceive that their farm and farming activities meet the objectives of sustainable agriculture. Inadequate knowledge, perceived difficulty of implementation, lack of market, negative attitude about technologies, and lack of technologies were major adoption barriers of SAPs in Kentucky.

Download: Preprint | Paper | Data | Code | Others. Abstract: The rapid expansion of solar energy on US farmland faces land-use conflicts and community opposition. Agrivoltaics is proposed as a middle-ground solution, but which factors will influence a solar developer’s decision to adopt agrivoltaics remain under-explored. We examined factors that will influence a developer’s decision to adopt agrivoltaics as well as the current status and future interests in agrivoltaics development in the US. Our findings show that reducing community opposition to large scale solar energy projects is the strongest driver of agrivoltaics adoption, carrying more than a 25% weight in their decisions. At the same time, developers face challenges such as coordination difficulties, a lack of regulatory assurances, and perceived risks associated with novel dual-use technology. Despite such challenges, we found that solar developers are building several agrivoltaics projects across the country and are interested in developing more in the future. Addressing barriers related to limited policy incentives, regulatory uncertainty, coordination challenges, and perceived risks will be critical to accelerating agrivoltaics development in the US.

Abstract: Active management such as prescribed fire and thinning can restore the savanna and prairie ecosystem to maintain a full suite of ecosystem services and creates a suitable habitat for wildlife such as white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Active management, however, comes with the cost of management and acceptance of management tools. The south-central transitional ecoregion is increasing in woody plant dominance due to the exclusion of fire and other anthropogenic factors which otherwise was a mixture of forest, savanna, and tallgrass prairie. Deer hunting is a vital source of revenue generation to offset the landowner’s management cost in the region. We studied Oklahoma landowners’ perceptions regarding active and sustainable management of forest and rangeland for deer habitat using two established theories of reasoned action and planned behavior as well as expanded theories adding moral norms. We analyzed mailed survey data using structural equation modeling. We found that subjective norms and perceived behavior control significantly affected deer hunting intention when moral norms were introduced into the model. Attitudes independently significantly affected intentions of deer hunting but have negative relations with the intentions. The study suggested that landowners have positive social pressure and were interested in active management but associated financial burden and risk could be shaping negative attitudes.
